A news site is judged on one span of time: how long it takes a reader to get from a headline to the article body. Everything placed between those two points — an interstitial, a modal, a slow-loading hero — is a reason to close the tab.
The secondary problem is navigation. A reader arriving for one story should be able to find the rest of that category without going back to a homepage.
Built the React and Bootstrap front end: category routing, the article view, navigation and the authenticated area for saved content.
Category routing is flat and the article view is the default destination rather than a modal over a list. Overlays feel fast to build and are hostile to how people actually read news — they break the back button, cannot be linked to, and trap the reader in a context they did not choose.
Article content renders before secondary furniture like related stories and author cards, so the thing the reader came for is on screen first even on a slow connection.
Shipped as a working news portal with category browsing, article pages and saved content behind authentication.
